Salt pregnancy tests are a home-made test that will tell you if you’re pregnant. You will need a small amount of your urine, a clean container and some table salt. There is no need to buy a costly home pregnancy test at the pharmacy.

It is, unfortunately.

No scientific evidence has been provided to support the use of salt in pregnancy tests.

If you are trying to find out if you are pregnant, a medically approved pregnancy test kit is the best way forward.

However, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to do a home pregnancy test with salt, then go ahead. Don’t put too much faith in the results.

What is the Salt Pregnancy Test?

First, a quick history lesson.

Since ancient Egypt, people have used urine to determine if they are pregnant.

However, a reliable urine-based pregnancy test was not developed until the 20th Century after the groundbreaking discovery of hCG (human-chorionic gonadotropin).

This hormone is produced when an embryo implanted in your uterus.

Home pregnancy testing kits are modern and detect hCG in the urine.

To find out if your result is positive or negative, you will need to take a strip or stick and pee on it for a while.

A salt pregnancy test can detect hCG in the pee.

Mix your pee and some salt.

The salt reacting with the hCG can cause the mixture to change (more details below).

This means that you are pregnant.

Does The salt pregnancy test work?

Sadly, no.

There is no evidence that salt reacts to hCG.

There are no studies that prove the salt pregnancy test works and doctors don’t recommend it.

This is not a good alternative to a pre-purchased pregnancy test kit.

How can you do a pregnancy test using salt?

Here’s how to do a salt pregnancy test.

  • Take a sample from your pee into a container
  • Add some table salt to a bowl
  • Put your pee on top
  • Please wait (for a few hours or minutes–opinions vary on this)

It is recommended that you perform the test at the beginning of each day with your first pee.

This is the highest concentration of hCG.

However, there is no evidence that salt reacts to the hormone .

Salt pregnancy test: positive vs. negative result

The Salt pregnancy testers disagree on what to do with the salty pee mixture that gives a positive or negative result.

What is a positive result?

The theory is that if you are pregnant, the mixture might look milky or cheesey. You might see foam at the top.

What is a negative result?

It isn’t likely that the mixture will change if you aren’t pregnant. It will look just like pee with salt.

Alternatives to the Salt Pregnancy Test

We’ve already mentioned that it’s not a good idea to rely on the results of a salt pregnancy testing.

The test may be “right” sometimes (there is a 50/50 chance!) However, it is best to confirm your pregnancy with a medically approved test.

These are the main options for

  • A kit for at-home pregnancy testing. There are many low-cost kits online.
  • You can have a urine pregnancy test done at a medical center. Free test at family planning clinics.
  • A pregnancy test . Here, a blood sample is taken by a medical tech and sent for testing for hCG.

What is the best way to find out if you are pregnant?

Signs of pregnancy early can help you to know if you are pregnant.

These are the most popular:

  • Missing your period
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tender breasts
  • Feeling tired.
  • More than usual

A home pregnancy test is still an option.

If you are pregnant, then you can immediately start your prenatal care.

Good luck!
